So far, there has been a lot of focus on finding and listening to one’s internal voice while embracing healthy self-care as necessary ingredients for cultivating purpose. As always there is an art in finding balance along a continuum, so let’s look at the benefits of caring for others as part of one’s purpose.
We are deeply interconnected. To live is to breathe. Life is filled with multiple systemic and symbiotic relationships. For instance, just as we breathe in oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide, the bountiful plant life and trees surrounding us, via the oxygen cycle of photosynthesis from the sun, emit large quantities of oxygen while they take in carbon dioxide.
Purpose is like breathing. The gifts we produce from our purpose are taken in by others. Some people receive it in the form of love. Others may be inspired. Perhaps some people are healed.
The fruits of purpose are plentiful and the rewards of returned love, appreciation, and recognition can incite renewed inspiration and energy for us to continue our purpose. Sometimes the unrecognized gifts go even further, like when we give an anonymous act of kindness to a stranger or make a heroic sacrifice to save someone or an entire population of people.
Inspiration for the Day: “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” –Winston Churchill
